Training : Program Design

I am new to training with weights, and I don't know which would be better--training with free weights or machines?

When deciding what to use for your specific program, it's important to remember that there are advantages and disadvantages for both types of training equipment. One advantage of weight training machines is that there is no need for a spotter or training partner since the weight stacks are located away from the training individual. These machines can also be easily adjusted for chair height and weight to be lifted. A disadvantage of the machines is that they do not allow for each limb that is lifting to be stressed independently. Whereas, when using free weights, each limb has to pull its own weight or the bar/dumbbell will fall. Another advantage of free weights is that they recruit more muscle fibers throughout the movement than machines. Free weights require a higher level of motor coordination among different muscles because you are required to balance the weight throughout the movement. Which one should you use? How about both! Experiment with machines and free weights and try to incorporate both in your training.
